We thrive on building developments that are an integral part of the urban environment. Our engagement with community groups and organizations, and our support and patronage of local events and local artists are part of our broader purpose: to build community, not just buildings.

Sponsorships. We want to make a positive, lasting contribution to the communities in which we build. Our ongoing sponsorships of public events, performances, and local activities help build community and strengthen the bonds that bring people together. We have a long history of sponsorship throughout the regions in which we work. Public art. We believe our developments should be more than simply buildings. Rather, they should be places that enhance the lives of the people who work and live in them. That’s why we include public art in our developments: art not only elevates our designs, it surprises and delights the people who live and work there, enriching their experience of the spaces we create.

We want our art to tell a story: to enhance our understanding of an area’s history, or add another chapter in the ongoing narrative of a given neighbourhood.

Working closely with our consultant Jan Ballard, we focus our efforts largely (though not exclusively) on local artists, creating a lasting connection with the communities in which we build.

These Hands is an homage to feminized labourers who work in industrial spaces.

Name: Cosmic Boulders •
Year: 2021

Produced from large granite rive rocks sourced from BC’s Squamish River, the cosmic boulders’ form is a reminder of where the elements of our earth come from and where they will return some day.

Name: Wuxus •
Year: 2020

Wuxus represents a Pacific tree frog, which to the Squamish people, represents ancient knowledge and connection to their ancestors.

In architecture, a folly is a building constructed primarily for decoration, but suggesting through its appearance some other purpose, or of such extravagant appearance that it transcends the ornament usually associated with the class of buildings to which it belongs.

Name: The Bird Carver •
Year: 2020

The Bird Carver celebrates the awe that nature can provide observers, while also celebrating the carvings of John Gervers who lived for thirty-four years on the nearby farm property now known as Mill Creek Linear Park.

Name: Out and Back •
Year: 2021

Out and Back is an artwork that suggests different viewpoints. When viewed up close, the colourful shapes appear abstract. Upon viewing at a distance they coalesce into an image of fields, mountains and the sky. The landscape is inspired by a painting made in the 1970’s by Rachelle Sawatsky’s grandmother. This painting depicted her farm in Yarrow, BC, the unceded, ancestral and traditional territory of the Sto:lo, known as S’olh Temexw.

Name: Whistling (people) •
Year: 2019

The pattern references the artist’s Musqueam ancestors who would harvest Mitchell Island rushes to make sleeping mats and quick shelters. The three spindle whorls represent the story of Mitchell Island historically as three separate lands; a story of the past, present and future.

Each boid is a simple metal chevron representing a bird’s wing in flight, while evoking business correspondence swept across the building’s façade by an invisible wind.

Memberships. Our goal is to be a “local” developer in the communities in which we build. By joining local industry groups and community organizations that support and promote local businesses, we can be part of a continuing conversation about how to make our living and working spaces more enjoyable.
